X-Plane 8.30 beta drawing near... and now I want your votes!
HUH???!?
Let me explain:
1: I am getting very close to a public release of X-Plane 8.30... there
are TONS of new features (as always), but this time we spent a LOT of
time on FRAME-RATE AND LOAD-TIME OPTIMIZATIONS... how much did we
accomplish?
I do NOT have the FINAL specs yet, but we got about a ONE-HUNDRED
PERCENT INCREASE in frame-rate, and we cut the scenery-load time IN
HALF for the no-roads-or-objects case (for lots of roads and objects,
the load time has not changed as much).
The framerate increase YOU get will vary depending on your video card
and com****r.
Whether your performance is limited by the speed of your CPU or your
video card determines how much the optimizations we did will help
you... if you are bound by the speed of your CPU, then you will get
lots of benefit, like we did. If you have a screaming fast CPU but slow
video card, then the optimizations we did will NOT help you as much.
This is NOT the case for most of you, though, since on almost any
reasonlable video card these days, the VIDEO CARD is NOT working too
hard with X-Plane, but the CPU is maxed out to 100%. This is because
compared to game like Quake or Doom, X-Plane has less use for the video
card, but much more need for a fast CPU. In other words, the CPU is the
limiting factor on most mahcines for X-Plane, not the video card, and
our optimizations were done with that in mind: minimizing CPU workload
to get higher framerate and shorter load times.. and we managed to
approx double our framerates and halve our load times by focusing on
nothing but speed improvements on the CPU for a while. You might not
get those exact speed changes, but it will be interesting to see how
much faster people are running when I release the beta some time in the
next few days or so.
2: the REAL San Bernardino is not really that pretty.. it is city in
the desert, and the mountains are nice, but the desert is not that
pretty to look at as it interacts with the city. this USED to not be a
problem, since the scenery in x-plane was not that accurate.. all we
saw were hills and it looked fine. but NOW that the scenery IS
REALISTIC, we see san bern as it really is in the sim: not that scenic
because of the interaction between desert and city urban sprawl.
So, that brings up the question: what SHOULD the default airport and
demo are be for X-Plane?
All of you that have global scenery, please fly all around AND FIND
WHAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE DEFAULT AIRPORT AND DEMO AREA. Find the
area that you think is most incredible to see in the simulator, and if
you think you founnd the best place, let me know what it is.
DOCUMENT YOUR CHOICE WITH A JPEG SCREENSHOT of the area for me to judge.
Once I have found a nicer area to show off as the demo area I will drop
it into the 8.30 beta and release it... have fun!
